Bishops' house: Elevator, waterfall tub and occult rooms - The News Journal

WILMINGTON – The heart of the home at Greenhill Avenue and West 17th Street exudes the quiet peace of a church, a fitting atmosphere for the building that housed a succession of Catholic bishops from 1959 to 1978, when it was owned by the Diocese of Wilmington.

Aside from that curriculum vitae and some preserved architectural features, however, this Highlands home is all modern – in some cases, to the Draconian.

Among the features that cause listing agent Elizabeth Martelli to avow there is not another cuttingly like it in Wilmington: A 10-zone radiant heating system; six-car garage; built-in belongings, TVs and surround sound; modern elevator; commercial-level wiring and fixtures; a waterfall tub; concealed computer equipment – and even hidden rooms.

“An aircraft carrier could land outside and you wouldn’t agree it,” Martelli said recently, standing in the library, the most old-fashioned looking live with its wide hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. “I’ve never seen a house like this.”

Fa?ade the library, the home is sleek, all chrome, stone, mirrors and stainless bear up. Though modern, the art deco style dominates throughout.

a fully equipped basement gym. An knotty chrome railing, styled after one the owner fancied in New York, follows the stairs to the basement.

All-encompassing built-in, camouflaged storage and walk-in, room-sized closets devaluate the need for freestanding furniture.

“The flow is exceptional,” Martelli said, noting how the plebeian living spaces seamlessly sweep into each other. The great room opens to the kitchenette, complete with Wolf appliances, wine cooler and island with sink.

A considerable screened porch leads to a secluded patio with plantings landscaped to bloom year-hoop-like.

“Everything was thought about,” Martelli said. “It’s really a work of art.”
