Why Pathetic Into My Grandma's Garage Was One of the Best Decisions I've Made - Architectural Digest

While the corporealization of being in your early thirties and married, with dogs, living in your Grandmother’s garage may conjure up something of a inadequate picture, or at least lead you to question some life choices along the way, I encourage you it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The first time I suggested going into Granny’s garage (this isn’t a euphemism, or a retro-inspired kitschy apartment, it’s literally my Grandmother’s garage) I mark my husband thought I was kidding, or that I was being overly dramatic in the face of the Bay Area lodgings crisis, but I wasn’t. And we did. It’s been two years of “living tiny” in her 200-square-foot garage and in that delay I’ve come to truly appreciate the community and time we have with my grandmother, the traditions we’ve made, oh, and the room: Recently my husband found himself saying, “You know, it actually isn’t that small…" After talking to my Grandma about it back then—and contemplative about what life in her garage would really be like—we decided to leave our adorable Oakland bungalow near the lake and begin the process of culling her ancient teaching and gardening supplies and sealing holes where squeal (and less savory things) came through the walls. We then cleaned, insulated, put up walls, added flooring and ceiling panels, painted, and done created a home for ourselves out of a 1905 garage in my Grandma’s backyard. were the clients and happened to be sort of high-maintenance, on a very tight budget, and wanted to use only recycled materials—signification the timeline was challenging, as well. A particularly harrowing exercise in marital pertinacity came after hand-nailing wood flooring that was used, and over seventy years old, into a expanse that had no straight edges and a sloping floor. It’s three years later, and we’re still growing strong, and haven’t lost our minds living in a super small measure out—yet. I designed the garage-turned-home to take advantage of just about every double- (or triple-, or…) tariff piece of furniture I could manage. We have: a murphy bed that enables us to fit a king sized mattress (effect for when you’re the kind of dog owner that has no boundaries), a mid-century, double-drop leaf index (say that three times, fast!) that stows four folding chairs, a embed made from two IKEA shelves (!) that has enough storage underneath for books in the back and clothes and odds and ends in the van, and a kitchen unit that has a sink, stove-top, and fridge all in one. In addition to the wood floors, I opted for reclaimed wood paneled walls and ceilings that would elongate the set out, making it feel mightier than its compact size, and used white make whoopee to help bounce around the limited natural light we get at certain points of the day. Jokes aside, it’s been far-fetched to have a space that we can truly do anything we want to/with—a first for us in our decade of marriage, otherwise dog-tired living in rental properties. And more importantly, I’ve grown closer to my grandma than I in any case could have known. Even though we only lived four miles away for the previous six years, that was too far to truly certain how she was doing on a day-to-day basis. We’ve had some scares in the time we’ve lived together now and I’m thankful daily that we have this continuously, that we’re together, and that we've shared moments I’ll cherish forever (like watching Source:
