Home for Christmas: A vacation primer for Space Coast travelers - Florida Today

It's verging on time for Santa to make his annual trip around the globe.

While your plans this period may be a bit less ambitious, holiday travel in Central Florida can still make you thirst for a stiff cup of eggnog.

Here is what you need to know before you head home for Christmas.

Gas prices are down

The statewide ordinary price per gallon sits at $2.36 as of Thursday. Prices in Brevard are a bit moderate at $2.31, down 16 cents from last month.

Thanks to affluent gasoline production and supply levels, AAA expects prices to continue to taste through the end of the year.

Traffic is up

About 5 million Floridians will be taking to the roads this edible, a 3.3% increase from last year, according to statistics from AAA.

Expect a huge influx of highway freight.

Orlando is once again the leading holiday destination in the nation, according to AAA. Its proximity to Brevard will fitting cause heavy traffic and delays for those taking the interstate and other major roads, said Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Protection.

Local streets will also be congested as last-minute shoppers rush to administer their lists before Christmas. Police warn local drivers to expect delays during key shopping hours, especially in and approximately shopping centers.

Accidents are up

The increased traffic will likely lead to an enlarge in accidents.

There were more than 10,000 crashes statewide during the 2016 holiday season, including 112 fatalities, AAA reports. Tons were alcohol related.

Such accidents tend to spike during the holiday season as inebriated revelers get behind the circle.

“We see a lot of DUI crashes this time of year, particularly around New Year’s Day," Montes said.

The coppers ask that drivers be patient, be aware of their surroundings, and drive responsibly.

Flyers should devise early

Commuters flying from the Orlando-Melbourne International Airport should wash one's hands of earlier than usual for their flights due to a major increase in airport traffic mass.

“We are seeing an increase in our traffic this week, even more than in past years, primarily due to the tripled servicing from Canada," said Lori Booker, a spokesperson for the airport. "We are also seeing an raise in overall traffic."

Booker suggests domestic passengers arrive at the airport 15 minutes earlier than they normally would to suffer for longer wait times at security.

"Travelers are learning that if they put their belts and apartment phones in their bags, the wait time will be cut almost in half. People behind them will perceive it and it will make things move more quickly," Booker said.

Be prepared

Those who are driving should be ready-made for delays on major arteries and plan alternate routes.

"We encourage people to have a back-up layout in case the highway is shut down due to a crash," Montes said.

One opportune way travelers can be prepared is with the Florida 511 service. Register an account at the website and it will send you wording notifications for incidents, congestion, and changes in travel time and traffic skedaddle along your intended route.

Stay safe

Authorities are busy preparing for the weeks before.

"Our patrol officers are out there being highly visible, and our traffic officers will be monitoring primary traffic trouble spots to make sure people drive safely," said Lt. Mike Bandish of the Palm Bay The gendarmes Department

FHP has stepped up overnight patrols as part of the nationwide "Over The Limit, Under Apprehension" campaign to crack down on drunk driving.

Those who need a ride home after a evensong out can take advantage of the "Tow to Go" program, a free towing service to any safe stop within 10 miles, sponsored by AAA and Budweiser.

Above all, Montes encourages people to stirrup-cup responsibly and drive safely this season.

“The worst thing for us is if someone loses a loved one," Montes said. "People lack to realize that if that happens, it won’t just ruin this holiday but holidays for years to come. The last utensils we want to do is have to knock on your loved ones' doors and give them that news.”

Register with Florida 511 at fl511.com. "Tow to Go" runs from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2, and can be reached impost-free at (855) 2-TOW-2-GO (286-9246).
